News From 4 - 6 Grades

Spring has arrived and with that comes the Biking Season for Spark r. The Biking Club will be biking on THURSDAYS strting May 1st. This is the most popular of the Spark Jr. activities. We are in need of volunteers to lead bike trips through the village. Volunteers need to be 21 or older and have a bike and a watch. We ride from 2:30- 3:10. The more volunteers we have the smaller the biking groups and the more enjoyment the children experience. You can volunteer for as few or as many biking days as you are available. Please call the school at 646-2087 and leave a message for Ray Spahn to volunteer or if you have any questions. The Running Club is in full operation and also available for children in 4-6 grades. They are jogging on MONDAYS. Children need to come prepared to jog with appropriate foot attire. Children may participate in both activities if they wish.

Mrs Moore's class

In Mrs. Moore’s class we just finished out unit on genetics. The class surveyed fifth graders on their ability to curl their tongue, have attached earlobes, and have a widow’s peak. We used this information to make computer graphs and bar graphs. The date for Upper Canada Village is June 20. Each child will need a birth certificate or a passport to cross the Canadian border. We will be looking for four
chaperones per class.

Fifth graders have been very busy during April and May. In Mrs. Moore’s room the students
produced their own powerpoint presentation on explorers. They wrote invitations to their parents and
each student made his/her own business card for the explorer he/she studied. A special thanks to
Sarah Pacilio for designing the program and to Mr. Menapace for making delicious refreshments
(cheesecake and cupcakes). Thanks to all the parents for taking time out of their busy day to attend.

For Patriot Pride Day, fifth graders helped clean litter from Broad Street and the Battlefield.

In science, we studied genetics. See our graphs on inherited characteristics of fifth graders.
The students used Excel and after polling fifth graders made their graphs.

Mr Spahn

The 5th graders are eagerly anticipating their journey to a foreign country to see what life was like during the colonial period. They will be heading to the Great White North- Canada. We’ll be visiting Upper Canada Village for a day to observe and interact with farmers, shopkeepers, and many others recreating life in a 1700s village. We’ve spent the year learning about our country’s history and large chunk of it during the colonial period. We’ll be bringing our birth certificates and passports to make the journey. We’ve been working all year at the 5th Grade Elementary School Store to earn money to pay for the trip.
